Buffalo Screams 2011 Wrap Up
When we launched Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival last year, we did so with an ambitious three-year plan to turn the fest into an event that would portray the City of Buffalo in a positive manner, shine a spotlight on local talent, and bring quality films and talented filmmakers to the Queen City. With our second year wrapped up, we're actually ahead of schedule: Buffalo Screams 2011 was a wonderful event that exceeded expectations.
We expanded from four days to five. Our out of town guests Melantha Blackthorne and Roy Frumkes brought a friendly professionalism to their interactions with attendees just as Debbie Rochon and Brett Kelly did the year before (I knew that Roy's presentation of SWIRLEE would be a crowd pleaser, but Melantha's INDRED AND UNDEAD was a complete shock, in every sense of the word!), and our local guests Rod Durick and Tony Mauro provided ample evidence that you don't have to live in Hollywood to be part of the filmmaking community. Tony and Paige Davis from POP Cinema did excellent, eye-opening Q&As that benefitted anyone wise enough to attend the (and I will not be surprised to learn that a few DVD deals may happen specifically because of the festival).
A film festival can only be as fun and entertaining as the films that screen and the filmmakers who present them. This year we were fortunate to have filmmakers attend from New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina, different parts of Canada, and MEXICO! Our second edition was a truly international affair (and I enjoyed communicating with all of the overseas filmmakers who submitted excellent work that we screened, but who were unable to attend). I have to give a special tip of my non-existent hat to the teams from COSAS FEAS, THE SUPER and THE TELL TALE HEART for making this year such a fun and warm experience; I know a lot of people made real friends and real professional relationships. And all of the filmmakers who traveled to show their short films - you really were an integral part of the festivities. It was wonderful to see the gathering of visiting filmmakers in the hotel lobby Saturday night - exactly the kind of networking and socializing that I believe a film festival is all about - and to hear that the same thing happened Sunday night after our awards dinner.
Ah, the awards dinner: for the second year in a row, a great experience. It isn't about winners and losers, it's about celebrating all of the filmmakers (and I particularly enjoy saluting the student filmmakers and the "Filmmakers to Watch"). Demetri Kallas, the star of THE SUPER, gave an acceptance speech that moved everyonbe in the room. The overwhelming majority of attendees understood exactly what the event was about and contributed to the positive feelings, much to our appreciation. I'm not blowing hot air when I say that we're already working hard on next year's event and plan to build on this year's momentum; expect numerous announcements to begin soon.
