BUFFALO SCREAMS HORROR FILM FESTIVAL HONORS FILMMAKER BRETT KELLY WITH GENRE SPIRIT AWARD

CONTACT: Greg Lamberson, glamberson@verizon.net

DATE: October 17, 2010

Buffalo, New York – The first annual Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival announced today it will honor Canadian filmmaker Brett Kelly with its Genre Spirit Award. The festival will be held at the Screening Room in Amherst, 3131 Sheridan Drive, Thursday, October 21st through Sunday, October 24th. Kelly will receive his award at the festival awards dinner at the venue on Sunday at 7:00 pm. Actress Debbie Rochon is the Guest of Honor.

“There are few artistic endeavors harder than being an independent filmmaker,” says Greg Lamberson, one of the festival’s directors. “It’s an expensive medium, even when done on a low budget, which requires the collaborative efforts of many people. It takes perseverance and determination to marshal all the forces necessary to complete a film, in the face of great adversity. Brett Kelly embodies that spirit.”

Kelly writes, directs, produces and even acts in feature films and shorts produced for his company, Brett Kelly Entertainment. He is responsible for horror films, science fiction films, comedies, a western, and even a pirate film.

“We admire Brett’s diversity,” says Emil Novak, Buffalo Screams’ other director. “He tackles all the genres that the Buffalo Screams crowd likes, and he has fun with them. He’s built up a large body of work in a short amount of time, he gets his films distributed, and budding filmmakers can learn a lot from him.”

Kelly is responsible for such films as KINGDOM OF THE VAMPIRE, THE FERAL MAN, THE BONESETTER and THE BONESETTER RETURNS, IRON SOLDIER, MY DEAD GIRLFRIEND, HELL AT MY HEELS, and PIRATES: QUEST FOR SNAKE ISLAND. He will screen his new superhero film, AVENGING FORCE: THE SCARAB, at Buffalo Screams at noon on Sunday. The film is nominated in the “More than Horror” feature film category.

On Sunday, October 24th, at noon, he will screen his family friendly superhero film AVENGING FORCE: THE SCARAB, (a nominee for "Best More than Horror Feature"). THE DEFILED announced.

BUFFALO SCREAMS proudly announces our fourth Showcase feature, THE DEFILED, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Julian Grant.

A man infected with a deadly viral disease must cope with his newborn child in a savage world. He is joined in this odyssey by a woman he saves from near death and together they must brave a desperate new world. This black and white, non-verbal film follows this unlikely family as they must brave this horrible near-future and come to terms with their own fears and torments. Not for the faint of heart or squeamish, 'The Defiled' is reminiscent of Guy Maddin, David Lynch and Andrei Tarkovsky in this examination of love, death and sacrifice.

UNDER THE SCARES Documentary announced.

BUFFALO SCREAMS proudly presents our third Showcase presentation: UNDER THE SCARES, a documentary by Steve Villeneuve.

Cheap scares. Extreme gore. Loads of nudity. These have been the three staples of low budget independent horror films since the 60's. But what's a filmmaker to do when, thanks to technology, ANYONE can make a film these days? UNDER THE SCARES offers an inside look into the production and promotion of an independent, ultra low-budget horror film, while combining interviews and insights from some of the genre's biggest legends - Lloyd Kaufman, Debbie Rochon, Tony Timpone, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Frank Henenlotter, and many more. In addition to tips and tricks for emerging filmmakers, they offer their opinions on the genre (where it's been and where it's going) plus lots of intriguing personal anecdotes. The result is a compelling look into the world of horror films that will interest any movie enthusiast wanting to know more about what really goes on behind the scenes. Forget everything you’ve learned from the DVD extras of big Hollywood productions, the real truth lies UNDER THE SCARES!

Buffalo Screams expanding its Programming and Submissions

BUFFALO SCREAMS is expanding it programming and submissions to include "More Than Horror" - genre films that don't quite fit the horror paradigm but appeal to the same audience: over the top action, violent crime drama, superhero cinema, gory grindhouse, intense science fiction, and cross-genre films. Submission fees will be the same as for other categories - $15.00 for trailers, $25.00 for shorts, and $40.00 for features and feature length screenplays. If you wonder whether or not your film qualifies for this unusual category, please contact us. Actual award name will be tailored to the appropriate genre when presented.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED announced

BUFFALO SCREAMS proudly announces our second Showcase Presentation: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED, a collaborative artistic mash-up of George Romero's cult classic. Nearly 150 International artists and animators chose their favorite scenes and re-envisioned them through their own artwork, with no restrictions on style, media or process - resulting in an eclectic 'art show' interpretation of the seminal 1968 film, all placed over the original's audio. With work ranging from oil paintings to comic illustrations and sock puppets to CGI and stop-motion - NOTLD:R not only pays the respect due to this most important work in horror history, but encourages viewers to experience the film in a brand new light that bursts with the humor and horror of a new generation of artists. Art is dead...yeah, it's all messed up.

HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE Documentary announced

BUFFALO SCREAMS proudly announces our first Showcase presentation, HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE. This wildly entertaining, feature length documentary on the man behind such horror classics as BLOOD FEAST, TWO THOUSAND MANIACS, and THE GORE GORE GIRLS was co- directed by Jimmy Maslon, who owns the rights to Lewis's films, and Frank Henenlotter, director of BASKET CASE, BRAIN DAMAGE and FRANKENHOOKER. The film is jam packed with nudity, buckets of outrageous gore, and interviews with such horror stalwarts as Joe Bob Briggs, Henenlotter, Lewis's producer partner David Friedman, and the Godfather of Gore himself. Presented courtesy of Something Weird Video.
